Investing in Infrared!

Enhancing Our Bat Surveys at NatureWise Ecology.

26th February 2025

At NatureWise Ecology, we’re always looking for ways to improve the accuracy and efficiency of our ecological surveys. That’s why we’re excited to announce our recent investment in infrared (IR) cameras, a valuable tool that enhances our ability to monitor bats on our surveys for 2025.

Infrared cameras work by detecting heat signatures rather than relying on visible light, making them incredibly useful for nocturnal surveys. This technology allows us to track bat emergence more effectively, especially during dusk emergence surveys when bats leave their roosts in low light conditions

Our new Nightfox IR cameras offer several advantages:

Enhanced Detection: Bats can be difficult to spot with the naked eye, especially in low light conditions. Infrared technology picks up their heat signatures, making them far easier to spot bat emergence surveys.

Improved Data Collection: The footage captured provides clear evidence of bat activity, making it easier to analyse emergence patterns and presence/absence, which is essential for effective dusk emergence surveys.

Our investment in IR technology also aligns with the latest guidance from the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT, 2023), which recognises the value of infrared cameras in improving the accuracy of bat surveys. By keeping up with new technology, we ensure our methods are both effective and compliant with best practices, to provide you with high-quality bat emergence reports. If you’re interested in learning more about our work or require bat surveys for planning applications in 2025, get in touch – we’d love to help!

Happy New Year!

What's in store for 2025?

23rd January 2025

As we step into 2025, NatureWise Ecology is gearing up for another exciting year in ecology! During the winter months, we’ve been spending some down time monitoring local owl populations, observing their habitas and movements during the winter months. Our passion for wildlife and biodiversity extends into our freetime as much as our work.

This time of year is great to see Short-eared owls in coastal habitats where they overwinter. They favour habitats like salt marshes and coastal corridors during the colder months to exploit an abundance of food and shelter from the windy uplands. Unlike many owl species, they are often active during the day, making them easy to spot as they hunt over open landscapes. These owls are drawn to the rich feeding opportunities in these habitats, preying on small mammals like voles and mice.

Spring is just around the corner however, and it’s the perfect time to start planning ecological surveys for your upcoming projects. Whether you’re preparing for planning applications or submission, or looking for an ecological impact assessments, or protected species survey, taking early action is key to staying on track.

NatureWise Ecology is committed to helping you navigate the challenges of 2025. We’re passionate about making a difference and can’t wait to collaborate with you on your next project.
